McCloy + Muchemwa
McCloy + Muchemwa is the design and architecture studio of Steve McCloy and Bongani Muchemwa. With their roots in Africa and now London-based, the studio’s work demonstrates an inventive exploration into design thinking. They are keen makers, producing and installing many of their own design projects, particularly those with experimental materials or techniques, but are also committed collaborators - In recent years they have found opportunities to team-up with other organisations to tackle all manner of public projects… and preconceptions!
The pair’s work - including designs for artworks, installations, landscapes and buildings - is founded on a deep respect for the artistic process, a knack for producing expressive low-budget structures (Austerity Chic), and an honest pursuit of joyful results.
Steve + Bongani have been named in the Architects' Journal 40 Under 40, featured in Wallpaper* magazine's survey of the next generation of 10 London practices, and named as RIBA Journal Rising Stars in 2022. Most recently McCloy + Muchemwa and their collaborative team on the Tustin Estate redevelopment project (led by dRMM) have won a ‘Pineapple Award’ specifically for the Community Engagement activities that “embedded” residents in a process that had “clarity and accountability at its heart”.
